File Me Under Woof!
Current location: New York, NY
Place of birth: Lincoln, NE
Tale of the tape: 6’5” 220lbs.
Sign: Pisces
Favorite place in New York: Housing Works Bookstore in Soho

Outside of his office, he is the director and assistant coach for a men’s rugby club. His playing career began in college and is a proud former Cornhusker. The farm boys on the team taught him how to rope (ask him ladies, he’ll demonstrate).

He spends his occasional free weekend as an EMT for the Central Park Medical Unit. Working at emergency medicine in New York City relaxes him, compared to the library business. Looking for a sylvan tryst in the big city’s best park? Check out the waterfalls at the north end between The Pool and Harlem Meer. Bring a blanket, wine and thug spray for the drug dealers.

Zack’s favorite hobby is bicycling. Nothing better than NYC by bike. Smell the rainbow of the city. Keeps you in motion, fit and hard to mug.

Brett is the director of the Collingswood (NJ) Public Library, a part-time PhD student in Library and Information Science at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, the treasurer of the New Jersey Library Association, Chair of the ALA Future Perfect Presidential Task Force, and a co-founder and editor of In the Library with the Lead Pipe. Back when he had spare time, he used to practice yoga several times a week (he even became a certified instructor) and often ran barefoot through the streets of his home town.

His favorite writers are Martin Amis, Lester Bangs, Warren Buffett, Atul Gawande, Bill James, Rany Jazyerli, Judith Martin, Alice Munro, Mark Pilgrim, and David Foster Wallace.

His favorite color is orange and he is usually pretty joyful, but generally not in an annoying way.

Mario Ascencio is a 1st generation library user. Born in New York City and reared in Los Angeles, he enjoys the multiculturalism that exists in large cities. He currently lives in Washington, DC with his husband and is the Library Director at the Corcoran Gallery of Art / College of Art and Design. Mario is passionate about the equity of information for all. At the age of 17, Mario helped an illiterate woman get her first library card. This empowering experience made him realize the extent to which libraries impact the everyday lives of people, in particular the disadvantaged. He knew at that moment he wanted to become a librarian in order to help people connect to information. Now, as a Library Director in a museum/college setting, he is one of the few Latino library directors in this arena.

Mario has held positions at George Mason University, the District of Columbia Public Library, the Getty Research Institute, the UCLA Arts Library, and the Smithsonian Institution Libraries. In addition, Mario held graduate internships at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

On a national and international level, Mario has presented lectures, keynote addresses, workshops, and radio and television interviews throughout the United States, El Salvador, Mexico, and Panama. Topics have included InfoDiversity, Libraries and Civil Societies, Web 2.0 Technologies in Libraries, and Library Services to Latinos and Spanish-speakers.

Mario holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of California, Los Angeles; and a Bachelor of Arts in Art History with a minor in Italian from California State University, Northridge.

Sol graduated from the University of Arizona, School of Information Resources and Library Science in December of 2004. He attended library school as a Knowledge River scholar. Knowledge River is a program where students learn about and foster library, information, and cultural heritage services to Latino and Native American communities.

This public librarian carries a lot of weight, not because of the 230 pounds on his six foot frame but because he manages a large branch library in the south side of Tucson, Arizona. He stands tall knowing the public library serves anyone and everyone, and he means everyone. The public library bridges gaps whether it be digitally, socially, or economically.

Sol stands even taller knowing this calendar will raise funds for the It Gets Better Project. So if you’re reading this, stop by your nearby public library and know librarians have your back.

Sol is married to a stunning lady and has three beautiful children.

Von works out regularly at the gym and occasionally—with a little prodding—poses shirtless for photos, but he is in fact a PhD candidate doing research on the history of the Filipino history book at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information, where he is affiliated with the Collaborative Program in Book History and Print Culture. Von is also a licensed librarian in the Philippines, with a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of the Philippines.

In his blog, Filipino Librarian, he has written that “We can’t just leave it to others to tell the people who we are; that’s why the stereotypes about librarians continue to flourish. We have to be the ones to go out there and tell people who we are. It’s not enough to complain about inaccurate images of librarians; we must be able to present alternative, positive images in movies, books and, yes, blogs.” Now he realizes that “calendars” should be added to the list.

The images may not always be viewed positively, but they do present different facets that are rarely seen by most people.

Steve is a reference librarian and professor in Chicago. He has published on usability and Library 2.0 and he tinkers with Web design and programming. He got his MLS at Indiana University where he also received an MA in Communication and Culture. Before jumping into the Library world he was a produce guy at Whole Foods. As a result Steve is 80% organic but he is uninterested in giving up Captain Crunch. He has biked across Iowa and once attempted a Portland to Chicago trip making it as far as Walla Walla. Steve is a huge music fan and before he became a dad he saw live music as often as he could. These days he is more likely to be teaching his five year old the history of rock.
